Discover the Indie Film Scene

Updated: Aug 20

If you’ve ever felt like mainstream movies are a bit too... mainstream, then welcome to the indie film scene! In the indie world, you can commandeer your own ship, and this is one place your quirky way of seeing the world and humanity can shine. It's its ecosystem, where, before anyone else does, you have to back yourself. Indie films are the underdogs of cinema, but can be the top dog that amplifies your storytelling voice. Budgets may be shoestring, but our imaginations don't have to be. Independent films are more often than not packed with heart, soul, and a whole lot of passion. Ready to dive in? Let’s explore what makes the independent film scene so irresistibly cool!

Why the Independent Film Scene is a Game-Changer

The independent film scene is where magic happens. Unlike big studio blockbusters, indie films are free from the usual Hollywood or whatever Wood you come from's formula. This means more originality, more risk-taking, and way more fun. You get stories that surprise you, characters that stick with you, and plots that don’t always follow the predictable path.

Think about it - indie filmmakers often wear all the hats: writer, director, producer, and sometimes even actor! This hands-on approach means every frame is a labor of love. Plus, indie films often explore themes that mainstream movies shy away from, like complex relationships, cultural nuances, or just plain weird but wonderful ideas.

If you want to feel like you’re discovering a hidden gem, indie films are your treasure map. And guess what? The indie film scene is growing faster than ever, thanks to streaming platforms and passionate communities.

How to Get Involved in the Independent Film Scene

So, you’re hooked and want to jump right in? Awesome! Getting involved in the independent film scene is easier than you think. Here’s how you can start:

  1. Watch Indie Films Regularly

There are big platforms like the Durban International Film Festival, Sundance Now, MUBI, Vimeo, and even Netflix that have fantastic indie selections. But smaller fests that allow opportunities for budding filmmakers, like the Mpumalanga Film Festival, genre-based Days of the Dead Film Festival, and Short of the Week, have places where you can watch selections. Try to watch at least one indie film a week. Your thirst for unique expression will thank you.

  2. Indie film community

Connecting with fellow indie lovers is a key step to building community (and even crew) in the indie space. You’ll find recommendations, discussions, and even chances to attend indie film festivals or virtual screenings. It’s like a secret club, but way cooler. And you often find this by attending festivals.

  3. Support Indie Filmmakers

Follow indie filmmakers on social media, share their work, and if you can, contribute to crowdfunding campaigns. Every little bit helps keep the indie spirit alive.

  4. Create Your Own Content

Got a story to tell? Grab your phone or camera and start filming! Indie filmmaking is all about passion, not perfection. Short films, vlogs, or even podcasts about indie films can be your entry point. It's not about perfection, it's about getting your reps in. Trial, error, FINISHING!

  5. Attend Indie Film Festivals

Festivals are the heartbeat of the indie scene. They’re where you discover new talent, meet filmmakers, and soak up the creative energy. Plus, they’re a ton of fun!

What is the Biggest Indie Film of All Time?

Ah, the million-dollar question! When we talk about the biggest indie film of all time, one title often steals the spotlight: “The Blair Witch Project”. Released in 1999, this low-budget horror flick changed the game. Made for just $60,000, it grossed nearly $250 million worldwide! Talk about punching way above your weight class.

Why did it work? The Blair Witch Project used a found-footage style that felt fresh and terrifyingly real. It was a viral sensation before viral was even a thing. This film proved that indie movies could not only compete with Hollywood but also redefine genres.

Other indie giants include “Pulp Fiction”, “Little Miss Sunshine”, and “Juno” — all films that started small but made a huge impact. These movies show that indie films can be both critically acclaimed and wildly popular.

SHARED GROWTH - How We Made Our Indie Rom-Com - LOVED OUT

I, as the director of Loved Out, loved the heart and silliness of rom-com, but they always felt unrealistic to me. But I still believe in love and how our idea of love for others and self starts with family. So I made one of my own, with my favorite ingredients. A bit of action, a ton of attitude, quirky characters, and a lot of heart. That's the beauty of indie filmmaking, the art can be an extension of you and things you adore. But even then, you can't do it alone. It takes a village of people who believe in the vision to stand by you to execute it.

Loved Out, for example, is an indie romantic comedy from South Africa that didn't just bring together like-minded people, but small companies in the production pipeline that wanted to grow too. Grips company, camera department, stylists, and so they were able to give a discount because the production wasn't just about me, but them too—their development and opportunities to experiment.

When you can find common ground beyond the creative, you can find your collaborators.

How to Support and Celebrate Indie Films Every Day

Supporting indie films isn’t just about watching them once and moving on. It’s about becoming part of a movement that values creativity and diversity in storytelling. Here’s how you can be a champion for indie cinema:

  • Spread the Word: Share your favorite indie films on social media. Write reviews or blog posts. Your voice matters!

  • Buy Merch and Soundtracks: Many indie films offer unique merchandise or soundtracks. Buying these supports the filmmakers directly.

  • Attend Local Screenings: Check out indie film nights at your local theaters or community centers. It’s a great way to meet fellow fans and filmmakers.

  • Engage with Filmmakers: Follow them on social media, join Q&A sessions, and participate in discussions. Filmmakers love hearing from their audience.

  • Donate or Volunteer: Many indie film festivals and projects rely on volunteers and donations. Your time and money can make a big difference.
